Shingles itself is not contagious. It comes from the same virus that causes chicken pox. It occurs only when the virus in the person's body becomes active (following a bout of chicken pox, the virus is actually present in the body but becomes dormant in the spinal nerve cells, but can be "reactivated" if you will, by a weakened immune system, or physical or emotional trauma). So contact w/ and infected person won't cause shingles.

However, since shingles and chicken pox are related, contact w/ someone who has the virus can spawn chicken pox in a person who hasn't had them.
