I personally have never douched before, but my older cousin promotes it like it's the best thing since sliced bread. I have two questions. One: Is it the water pressure from the douche or the contents of it that make girls sick or infected. And what you ladies who have done it before think about it? I'm just curious - but I don't plan on using it. Thanks!

Ooo, douching is BAD. Do NOT do it unless you're specifically instructed to do so by your physician (and it's very rare for a physician to have you douche).

Douching definately does encourage infection. See, the thing is that the vagina is a self cleaning bit of you. And inside it you have a very delicate balance. Douching interrupts that balance and washes away the good stuff that keeps your vagina healthy - which makes it that much easier for the bad bacteria to overwhelm things and cause infection.

Honestly, there's no reason to douche. Your vagina cleans itself. And the way it smells is the way it is supposed to smell (unless you have an infection - in which case you need to treat the infection by seeing your doctor and getting appropriate treatment for whatever infection it is rather than making it worse by douching). It's not supposed to smell like "ocean breeze" or "springtime fresh" or even like nothing at all. It should smell like a vagina.

So while these treatments are supposedly going to make you smell better or make you cleaner, they're actually really bad for you and can cause/encourage infection. Honestly, if I had my way, such things and their incideous commercials would not be avaliable - because they're unnecessary and harmful.

If you use the board search function and look for "douche" you'll find other information about it.

I've douched two times, both times I was advised by a physician to do so with a mild vinegar water solution because I have to have a cyrofreezing done.

I personally find it pointless. Vaginas aren't supposed to smell like a Summer's Eve! I personally don't find it the least bit arousing when a woman attempts to have a rose garden down there...it's just kind of sad that women feel that way about their bodies.

Douching with antiseptic solutions are actually relatively common medical practice. these douches tend to be iodine solutions (dunno why your doc said to use vinegar, CatFight) meant to disinfect following surgery (hysterectomies and the such, but this is a RARE procedure for the folks who'd come around Scarleteen). Anyway, these douches are prescribed by gynecologist and as i said, it's generally following surgery.

the over-the-counter stuff is just bad news. never douche unless your doc said to do it.

You can either be part of the problem or part of the solution, but in the end, being part of the problem is much more fun.
