I've been hearing some bad stuff about it on and off for a while now, and frankly, while I'm not really buying it, I'd like to know what the deal is. Are there really any increased risks from this brand in particular?

These two pages explain the risks of all combined oral contraceptives, including Yaz/Yasmin. It then also lists some potential risks and side effects specific to drospirenone, a synthetic hormone unique to these pills: http://www.rxlist.com/yasmin-drug.htm and http://www.rxlist.com/yasmin-drug.htm

Those potential additional risks/side effects are, primarily, about very specific groups of women, not all women.

So would you say for a healthy, non-smoking young woman, the pills with drospirenone don't present that much higher of a risk than other birth control pills?

In my educated opinion, no.

Really though, as with any medication, your doctor should be reviewing your health history to determine what medications are best and safest for you. So, these questions, when they're about your specifically, are always best asked of a healthcare professional who can review your whole health history with you.

When the whole controversy about it started I asked my doctor and she basically said that it wasn't a big deal. My mother has been bringing it up though and I get paranoid sometimes, so even if I don't believe the hype I like to know what it's about.

Thanks for your educated opinion and for the sites [Smile]
