So I've been reading alot of feminist books lately and Im wondering if any of you have any suggestions for some more reading materials.

Currently Im reading Manifesta and Grassroots. But I also have borrowed from the library Getting Even (Why women dont get paid like men - and what to do about it) and Failure is impossible (The histroy of american womens rights).

Also Zine wise I have a subscription to Bitch, Ms and The Nation but is there any other political/feminist mags you would suggest?

The Female Eunuch, Germaine Greer.
I haven't read it myself but a few people I know have and they raved about it.

Are you looking for books on any particular topics or areas within feminism? There are so many cool books out there ... [Smile]

Per Germaine Greer, The Whole Woman is probably a better choice in terms of something most topical to the now.

Something I think would be really topical to your interests E., is "Let Me Play: The Story of Title IX" which is a great look at how Title IX changed things for girls in the states per sports and other issues.

I think you might also like some of Mary Daly's work -- people either love her or don't like reading her at all, mostly just because she's incredicly creative with language, so the way she writes seems to either work for you or leave you dizzy. I'm one it works for. Gyn/Ecology is a great one, and her Wickedary is sheer aweseomness.

"Listen Up: Voices from the Next feminist Generation," is a great anthology of younger feminists, and speaking of younger feminists, Rebecca Walker is likely someone who you'd appreciate as well.

One more I can think up which I'd always suggest for folks looking for good primers is bell hooks' "Feminism is for Everybody: Passionate Politics." bell hooks' anything, really: she's just so brilliant and amazing.

In terms of managzines, New Moon may be a bit young for you, but it's totally run and edited by a collective of younger women, which makes it seriously awesome. In These Times is a great one, MoXie is good stuff, and Off Our Backs is basically the cornerstone feminist magazine.

Thanks so much Heather for the list of everything.

Im in a reading mode at the moment so im munching thru books pretty fast and just want more to read and let my mind grow with more knowledge of everything.

I saw Listen up and Let Me play at the bookstore the other day and almost bought them but I had already spent about 50 bucks on zome Zines and a few other books so I decided not too.

But next time I go they will most def be on my list. Actually all those you mentioned seem really amazing.

No trouble. And if you like, next time you do the skateboard thang for the wee girls, and my friends daughters come along again, I'll hop over too and lend you a bunch from the home library here.

That would be super rad. I have no clue when the next thing is but yeah that would be really cool. And we need to get you too skate too. So you can add one more thing to your list of acomplishments.

I'm pretty sure I first learned about a couple of my favorite books on the boards here, but that was probably a couple of years ago, so perhaps they haven't been recommended lately...

"Kiss My Tiara: How to Rule the World as a SmartMouth Goddess" by Susan Jane Gilman is such an entertaining read. Funny and empowering...I bought copies of this for everyone I know!

"The Secret Lives of Girls: What Good Girls Really Do - Sex Play, Aggression, and Their Guilt" by Sharon Lamb -- incredibly insightful! Should be required reading for everyone on Earth.

And this isn't really a feminist text, but it is written by a fabulous woman with a totally sexy brain -- "Assassination Vacation" by Sarah Vowell. Extensive research went into this fascinating examination of the first three presidental assassinations.

for magazines Bust is a neat one, it's more of a women's magazine from a feminist perspective rather than an exclusively feminist issue magazine.

Keep in mind that some books have their faults, and it's interesting to also look for critiques of those books so you can spot the issues. I know in Gyn/ecology there are issues with the way women of color are represented. But that doesn't mean it's not valuble anyway.

Books I like: We Don't Need Another Wave: Dispatches from the Next Generation of Feminists, if you like Bitch take a look at their book Bitchfest it has a bunch of neat articles in it, and Fresh Lipstick: Redressing Fashion and Feminism by Linda Scott is a really good book on beauty issues

I really like 'Chelsea Whistle' by Michelle Tea. It's written as a memoir and is a really insightful look at sexuality and gender. All of Tea's books are awesome.
