Hi, everyone!

I think I may have BV. I plan to schedule my first Gyno appointment very, very soon (within the next couple of weeks), and I'm really nervous about infections, etc. [Frown] Luckily, I understand that bacterial infections are treatable, etc.

Also: is oral sex a cause of BV? I have only had it once (though it was unprotected -- I know, bad choice), but I think I'd been showing symptoms before then. Eh. Are there ways to have protected oral sex? I really don't want to give it up entirely, seeing as it took me so long just to become comfortable enough for my boyfriend to do it at all.

However, I would feel so much more comfortable doing it if I knew that I was being safe.

I'm sorry if this is not clear. [Frown]

BV can be caused when bacteria are introduced to the vagina during unprotected sex, so I would guess that yes, unprotected oral sex could possibly contribute to it. But the good news is, there are ways to have safe oral sex! [Smile]

You can use a dental dam (which is a latex barrier you place over your genitals), but if you can't find one near you, you can actually make one at home. Just grab a condom, cut off the reservoir end, cut lengthwise down the whole thing, and use that as a dental dam (N.B.: if you're using a flavored condom, make sure that the flavored lube isn't on the side facing your genitals, as it can lead to yeast infections).

Or, if all else fails, you can use some good ol' non-microwaveable saran wrap with lube!
