In my anatoy and physiology class two years ago, we were discussing monosaccharides and polysaccharides including sugars...
I specifically rememebr her speaking of fructose and how it was in sperm. But I have AP Biology this year, and my biology teacher reminded me (I guess it must not have registered in A&P) that fructose is the sweetest suger there is and people even use it in sodas.
SO where is all this going? Well, just what do sperm taste like? I would imagine them as salty, being a bodily secretion like sweat, but if they contain fructose, that would make sperm have a sweet taste. Which is it?! Sweet or salty?!
Thanks in advance for any replies :-)

i do love these sorts ofquestions. thanks for asking!

semen does have a lot of fructose in it. but it also has other flavorful chemicals like polyamines (these are chains of amine groups), citrate and zinc.

overall, it does not taste sweet. fructose is about 3 times as sweet as sucrose (table sugar), contrast that with aspartame which is about 300 times as sweet as sucrose. Amines, however, are pretty pungent. Amines are a nitrogenous compound, and in general, nitrogenous compounds can stink (like ammonia, urine, fish, spooge and so forth). Polyamines give semen its distinct odor and probably provides a lot of the flavor, too.

better to just wrap him in a flavored condom

Thanks Gumdrop Girl! Yeah, I am alway more interested in the scientiic explanation of things (down to the molecular level) than anything else. Your reply though helped out a lot (good to know someone else listens in science class too) :-)
Keep up the good work and see ya around!
