I want to address the vital importance of allies for those of us who are LGBTQ in the coming week.
If you are LGBTQ and have had someone be an ally or support for you, can you post a thank you note here with their full or first name we can potentially publish?

Dear Mom, Thank you for standing up for me, even when it conflicted with what you saw as your role as a parent. Thank you for being patient, and letting me grow. And most of all, thank you for being proud of me and my partner, and for letting me know that.

In no particular order, I thank Anne, Anna, H, Tim, Gloria, Rosemary, Steph and Mariam. Also I thank the few Sri Lankan friends who I have come out to, but can't name individually.
You listened and understood. You held me as I cried and told me that this would all get better one day. And then you told me again until I believed you. You told me all about your other gay friends, who are really happy now. You asked your little sister not to say "that's so gay". You worried for my safety when I was depressed and made sure I was alright. You told me I would meet someone to be with one day, and even if I didn't, I would always have you as a friend. That meant so much.

To Alistair - Thankyou for accepting that my orientation is part of who I am, you've never made any assumptions about my ability to be monogamous with you, you've never expressed revulsion about my crushes or attraction to women and you've always been completely supportive of my involvement with LGBTQIA community. You think before you speak to avoid saying ignorant things and I appreciate that. You help me feel safe in this world.
