I am not the only one using one as a teen and it does what they are supposed to do, so based on what is being said about them on the Oprah tv Show, isn't it a good idea that we use them to help explore our sexuality and what makes us feel good in our teen years?

Part of what they said, was that having one won't make us as dependent on a guy so we wont be running to them for sex which means there will be less STD's and pregnancies. I think that is true but what do you think? Isn't this a good idea and do you think they will they be making ones that might be a little less expensive for us and our needs?

Vibrators will make heterosexual women less dependent on men?

Yes, and once science discovers a way to create sperm from an egg, we will form a mighty amazonian-like, vibrator-weilding super society! Muahaha!

Nah, I kid of course. I think that it certainly is a good idea to give young women a chance to explore their sexuality, on their own terms, and at their own pace. It's nice that things like vibrators which might facilitate that process can be made more available for youths who want them...But I think the real hurdle here is not so much the price as actually giving a teen an oppurtunity to get one. Since, there's all sorts of things to worry about such as social stigma, parents, etc.

edit:

Erm, shoot. I thought this was in a different part of the forum. Could somebody with the authority please delete this if they see it? Thanks...

I'm not really a television watcher: want to fill folks like me in on what this show was and what it was saying more completely?

For the record, though, I wouldn't expect to see a line of "teen" vibrators any time soon. In the U.S., sex toys can't be sold to those under 18, for the most part, and those laws are pretty uncontested. I don't know that teen "needs" per vibrators differ in any way than those for adults, but I'd also not expect to see the cost go down. Many really are very cheap, and you probably don't want cheaper and cheaper toys, as the materials used and sound construction does matter when it comes to safety.

Why are those laws in place though? So long as a sex toy is up to health and safety standards, I can't see any reason why teens shouldn't be able to buy them if they want to without parental involvement.

I'm assuming sex toys have an 18+ rule because they're "adult" products meant for adult use, and we are legally adults in the US (generally) when we hit 18. I totally see where you're coming from, Jill, but I think the age issue also raises other questions. What would lowering (or doing away with) the age limit mean? How young is too young to have a sex toy? Should a 13 or 15 year old have the same privilege of sex toys as an 18 year old? If we could lower the age limit on sex toys, why not lower the age limit on buying porn as well?
