How long is your immune system weak for after you have Mono? I felt better from Mono about, 1 1/2 months ago, but I seem to be getting sick all the time this year, unlike any other year, listen to this, the first week of school I got sick, then I got Mono a couple weeks later, then right after Mono (when my throat got better) I got a cold, then I had the stomach flu and now I think Im getting sick again, (I keep sneezing and my throat is scrachy a little bit.) I take vitaman C tablets but I havent taken one in about 2 weeks (it kinda sliped my mind). Im just sick of getting sick...

It really varies from person to person and environment to environment. But consdiering you're somewhere where it's cold outside now, and go to high school and are thus exposed to a zillion little germies each day, it's going to take a while.

I'll repeat the natural prescription I gave to a friend having a weak immune system right now. Thank goodness I worked in vitamins and natural health for years.

In general, I advise the following, all of which can be found at your local health food store.

Daily:
- Acidophilus
- L- Lysine
- Vitamin C
- And an Echinacea and Golden Seal blend, preferably in dropper form (and Rainbow Light makes a combination encapsulated in grapefruit oil, so it doesn't taste heinous).

I advise all of those things for anyone to strengthen their immune system daily. I have always had a low white cell count, so it's also what I do for myself, and I am very rarely sick.

A note: with the echinecea and golden seal, the most effective way to take them is in a two-week-on, one-week-off cycle.

Also, be sure and keep your diet balanced (a good balance of vegetables and fuits, carbs and proteins), and given winter is upon us, bundle up when you go outside. If you're like me, you're a pain in the rump about wearing a hat, but since you're recovering from a pretty nasty attack to your system, wear one for now, okay?

What causes the low cell count, not enough of the right foods, or not enough of the vitamans that your perscribed? Or is it something different? If you dont mind me asking..

In my own case, no one has ever really been able to pin it down to anything save guesses about genetics and lots of childhood illnesses (I'm one of the few people I know my age who managed to get Scarlet Fever as a kid, for instance). I don't have any major diseases, save being borderline diabetic. I've just always had a fairly low white count, and I'd be willing to bet that if my diet and such weren't as good as they are, I'd always be getting sick.

Hey Mz. S....

you seem to be all up on this vitamin stuff... In my prenatal vitamins, they've added something called selenium - do you know what this is?

Sure. Selenium is good for you.

It is an antioxidant, like vitamans A, D and E. Antioxidants protect your body's cellular structure, and selenium in particular is known to be an excellent protectant against all sorts of cancers. It is an essential mineral, especially when it comes to fertility and fetal growth, and it can also help to prevent muscular dystrophy from occurring in infants.

Some people are selenium deficient, because it is generally found in sedimentary rock, and traces of it in things like brewers yeast, canola oil, and fish meal, which most people don't consume daily. Just be sure to take only the recommended amount, because in large doses, like Vitamin C, it can be toxic.

well, since it's right in the vitamin, i can't see me taking too much of it, unless i took two vitamins in one day or something.

I've been taking Folic Acid supplements, as well. My doctor said that taking this in larger-than-normal amounts (about 4mg) a day, that it would help ward off HPV outbreaks. It did, but now i'm wondering how much folic acid is safe? i'm taking 3mg a day, and have been for most of my pregnancy.

maybe i shouldn't be asking you this - i should probably be asking my doctor.

Just call me the natural health savant.

Really, folic acid isn't one of those that can be toxic, even in great amounts, and it's another one that most people are deficient in to begin with, especially when you're expecting and it's being doubly depleted.

Folic acid supplements are excellent during pregnancy, anyway. Neural tube defects (a family of neurological birth defects)have been linked to not having enough folic acid during pregnancy -- making sure you get a folic acid supplement is going to help protect your baby against these types of birth defects. So don't worry about taking them.

Re: Selenium.

The recommended dose is higher than before. One study showed a 60% reduction (!) of incidence of prostate cancer among men who took 200mcg per day. That is now recommended by some. It you should take it with Vit E as they work together as antioxidants.
