So, guys, I'm not sure if future decision-making is an appropriate topic for here, but it's driving me crazy and stopping me from doing anything. Except get angry and slam doors. I need help.
How do you make decisions about your life? Right now I'm trying to figure out if/what I will study next year. (Just finished first year of art/design school, thinking about doing something more practical/meaningful.. or taking a year off).
I have been refusing to talk to my parents about my decision process, because I feel like any time I talk to a new person I completely change my mind.
I'm starting to realise that I am way weird about sharing my ideas. If I tell someone about something I'm thinking of doing, next year/ with my life/ whatever, I frequently start to think it's a bad idea. Especially if they say something negative or ask a question I can't answer.
But even if they don't, I feel like it's not my own thing any more..like, I can't do it because I have told someone about it. Or my idea has become corrupted, or it's too embarrassing to talk in-depth about it. Also, if I'm planning to do something, and then someone independently suggests that I do it, (specially my parents) I won't want to anymore because I feel like I don't own it. Gah.. I also do this with art-project ideas, but I understand that a bit more.
Does anyone else get this? Am I just way too immature to make decisions? I'm gonna be 20 next week! Argh!

Have you thought about sitting down and just making lists on your own? Like a list of pros and cons for each idea that you're currently entertaining them. Then if you wanted, you could share that list with someone else, but you've already "owned" it by listing out all the different aspects of it.

No I understand completely. Last night i didnt sleep because i was trying to figure out what i was doing with my life, and Im 18 and at the end of my first semester in college.
Last night i just wrote down everything that i ever thought abotu doing and listing the pros and cons, and it helped a little.
But have you ever thought about seeing an advisor at your college? I mean mine has been really helpful in helping me pick classes, ect, for next semester. I mean if you write a list, you could show it to them and they could probably help you out, and i mean they are completely cool they arent going to "guide" you anywhere, the decisions are totally your own, and at the same time they are going to lead you in the right direction towards your goals.

I feel like I can't separate my thoughts out enough to make a list, or separate courses of study from related-but-slighly-less-important-in-the-long-run stuff, like where I will live and what sort of environment I will be studying in.But it's gotta be worth a try. And yeah, I am going to see a careers advisor for sure.

I think it's a good idea to consider where you'll live and the environment you'll be in as part of a course of study -- if you're miserable, you're less likely to finish teh course! So definitely put those things on your list.
