So today I went for my yearly physical and I told my Doc about my period issues(how I get really bad cramps) she said that if my period is really irregular (which it is) then I should go on the pill to help(because it regulates ones period) has anyone heard of this, because I sure haven't?

The pill helping with cramps really depends on why you're getting the cramps.
The pill also doesn't regulate a period, exactly: it does regulate when you bleed each cycle, but when you're on the pill, you don't really have a "real" period anymore, You have that bleed due to chemical withdrawal from the hormones.
It's normal for younger women to have irregular periods: hopefully your doc mentioned that. Usually, time will take care of that. But being on the pill will also take care of that while you're on it, save that it doesn't have any sort of permanent effect on your actual period. If you were irregular for other reasons (not just because you're young), then when you go off the pill, you may still be irregular.
Did your gynecologist look into WHY you are having the cramps, ask you a lot of questions -- like about your diet, how you take care of yourself, what your cramps are like, when you get them most, etc. -- maybe do any tests? If they just want to flop you on the pill without investigating further, I'd suggest seeking out a doctor who will work a bit harder than that.
None of this is to say that often, the pill can be a great solution to menstrual issues for plenty of women, on top of providing highly effective birth control. But if you don't need birth control, don't want to be on the pill, or just want to try other things first -- particularly if the why of your cramps may not be helped by the pill -- have a look here: Stamp Out Cramps!
