I recently found out that a teacher that I had when I was about 8 or 9 has been arrested because of child pornography. I always thought that he was creepy, but everyone else loved him. He never abused me in any way. I'm not sure what I'm asking for help on. I just...I'm not sure how to deal with this.

All you can do is have a sigh of relief that he was caught. I would suggest that you get involved by asking all the questions about it that you can. Keep in mind that he is not guilty until proven so. If the facts support his guilt then do what you can publicly to make sure he is put away for a very long time. Our legal system at times falls down in convicting child molesters and child porn distributors.

Ketherose: has the school formed any sort of support groups for dealing with this? That's pretty typical in these cases, so it might be worth digging around.

Wake-up calls like this are always tough for people the first time they get them. The truth is, there are predatory people all around us -- and they most often look, act like anyone else, are teachers, parents, neighbors, businesspeople, you name it -- but some of us grow up more keenly aware of that than others.

Processing dangers that you didn't see before can leave you feeling extra vulnerable, but I think it's helpful to bear in mind that they're not new dangers: you're just seeing them clearly for the first time. Doesn't make anything any less scary, for sure, but the point is that it's not like there's someone new who is going to crawl from under you bed, if you follow.

I always feel sorry for pedophiles, life must be so hard for them. They also get a bum rap, most of them care for children and would rather follow the greek model of pedastery than harming children. They are really the last sexual orientation that everyone else hates.

Light, let's remember that the subject of this thread is about a person who was using material that depicted the actual abuse of children. While some individuals who have sexual feelings for children recognise that sexual relationships with children are wrong, and therefore do not abuse children, it is important to remember that where child pornography is concerned, the real victims are the children who were forced into participating, not the people who create and use those images.
