I went in today to get my colposcopy done, and thank goodness they didn't have to do any biopsies. When he looked in there and put vinegar on my cervix, he didn't find anything abnormal, so he scraped what he couldn't see to be taken to the lab to be tested.

He told me that I have metaplasia. I asked him to explain and he just told me to research it. I tried looking for it but couldn't find anything. He told me that metaplasia forms on your cervix if you're on birth control, pregnant, or a smoker, but he didn't tell me exactly what it was.

Could someone please explain what metaplasia is for me?

Thanks!

Basically, it is the (normal) process of one tissue type replacing another on the cervix: it is an adaptation and new growth of cervical cells. You're still fairly young, so in your case, it's likely just development at your age, unless you are pregnant.

It *should* be kept an eye on, to be sure that those changing cells don't become the wrong kind of cells, i.e. cancerous cells, but in and of itself, it isn't necessarily anything to worry about.

i think it'd be helpful to breakdown a lot of medical jargon into root words.

-plasia means cell growth

meta- change
dys- wrong
hyper- too much
hypo- not enough

so "metaplasia" is cell changing. "dysplasia" is bad growth. "hyperplasia" means excess growth. and hypoplasia means insufficient growth.

groovy?
