I have a problem with my nails. They are very, very weak and peel all the time. Well, actually I peel my toenails because they get slits in the and they're just weak. I would love to have strong healthy nails that are long, but when ever they get past the tip of my finger they start peeling. I just wanted to know if there is anything I can eat or use to really help my nails become strong and durable. And is there anything that I do that makes them more weak? I've used the Almay Flouride nailpolish and that helped as long as I used it everyday, and now I can't even find it! I file my nails thinking that will help them from peeling but it doesn't. Please give me some solution for this problem. Thank you.

Eating a balanced diet in general helps with keeping nails and hair strong.
If you aren't opposed to eating animal products, Knox gelatin makes a product called "Knox for Nails" that a friend of mine's mother swears by. It's unflavored gelatin, and you put it in liquid and drink it.
In addition, polishing your nails can make them weaker and more brittle, so it may be a good idea to lay off the nail polish for awhile.
You may actually want to mention this to your doctor or dermatologist too...especially if OTC remedies aren't helping enough. You may be experiencing some sort of fungal nail infection or this might be a symptom of some other problem.
As to your concern about calcium: Like anything else, if you're careful about how much you're getting, you'll most likely be fine. Do you drink alot of milk or other calcium rich product? If you're already getting alot of calcium from your diet, then you probably don't need a suppliment. However, if you are not getting 100% of your daily value, a suppliment would probably be a good idea...especially in light of the problem you're experiencing. As long as you don't go overboard with the calcium (ie. taking 300% or something), then you should be fine.
My nails peel all the time too. But I found out that havinf my naisl painted ALL THE TIME prevents it, specially if they're dark colored. They dont peel that easily and when they do you dont see it, thus you wont have that overwhelming will to peel them. I am quite proud of my nails now, so I hope it helps you too

As far as I can tell, Knox For Nails is just orange flavoured, and contains about a tablespoon of powder per dosage (to be mixed into a glass of water) so if you can't find it, plain ol' Jello might work as well. Do remember that gelatine's an animal product, though.
There are a lot of orange juices out there that contain calcium, too. Tropicana makes one of the varieties in a carton, and I think Minute Maid has a frozen one. That might seem a bit safer and more appealing than a calcium supplement.

Yes I have tons of juices with calcium and I drink milk when I feel like it. I have the minute maid with calcium and a White cranberry juice with calcium. I've also been eating banannas and more fruit to be more balanced.
I think I'm already seeing an improvement but is it possible for there to be an improvement in about 3 days? My nails seem like theyre becoming longer and a tiny bit thicker. I also have this hand cream that is suppose to help your nails but I hardly ever use it.
