Cramps are simply caused by the contraction of your uterus.
And while menstrual cramps is something which most women tend to go through, if your cramps are so bad that over the counter medication cannot take care of it and is accompanied by fever or nausea etc, it would be a good idea to go see your medical practicioner as soon as possible to rule out any possible problems.
There are tons of ways to alleviate menstrual cramps. Personally, if they are really bad, I grab two painkillers and lie in bed with a nice hot water bottle on my abdominal area. Otherwise they don't really bother me much.
From our article On the Rag, some good ways of taking care of cramps includes
quote:Vitamins E and K, which are usually in a regular daily multivitamin help with regularity, and to slow a very heavy flow. You can also make an herbal tea of red raspberry leaf, strawberry leaf, peppermint and ginger (and it tastes nice, too) to help with cramps and to balance your cycles. If it tastes gross, add some honey.

Well, Lin's told you what causes them, and has some good suggestions on how to battle them, but I would like to add that in my experience that different things work for different women in terms of what helps.
Before I was on the pill, I had very bad menstrual cramps, and I found that stretches didn't help much, and niether did many painkillers. Asprin did help a fair bit if I wanted a quick solution, but the healthiest option for me was to exercise. When I was fit, I barely suffered from cramps at all, and even exercising a few times in the week leading up to my period helped a lot.
Now that I'm on the pill, I find that things like stretches do help quite a bit- but my cramps aren't nearly as bad.
You really do have to search around to find the best method for you, and I would recommend trying natural remedies first- after all, better not to put drugs into your body unless you really need to.

I've never tried this out since I don't really get cramps, but I've read here on the boards that cutting down on your dairy intake can help cramps.
