Hey everyone, I haven't been able to find much about my issue here via the search function, so I thought I'd just go ahead and post something.

I'm slightly obsessed with my hair. Brief history: about three years ago, my hair was long and I think I liked it, can't really remember. Then for the next two years up till now I kept cutting it very short and hating it every time I did. Right now it's basically shoulder-length and cannot be called particularly long or short.

For the past year I've hated my hair so much I've cried over it at times, but I'm sure that also had to do with overwraught hormones and such.

My hair is thick and loosely wavy, and not particularly silky. I hate, in the strictest sense of the word, the texture of it. In addition, its color is a middling mud-brown. Does anyone else really, really dislike their hair? Or did you ever? If so, what did you do about it?

I know this seems amazingly petty and egotistical, it's just an issue I have that I cannot seem to ignore. I'd really appreciate any imput/experiences from anyone else.

-Jenni

I've never liked my hair, so I can definitely sympathise with you. Mine has always been (naturally) mousy brown, not straight, but not curly, and with a mind of its own.

I found the only thing that makes me happy with my hair is a visit to a professional! They are the only people who can tame it. I try to get my hair relaxed with either a straightner, or gel, whenever I visit.

Maybe you should visit a reputable hairdresser and ask them to go wild and figure out what best suits you. Let them take over, and you may end up with a style that you love.

Sorry I can't offer anything more constructive

I cut my hair short too, and now its the worst since I'm trying to grow it out again. At least, I did like it when it was first cut.
Entropie is right too. Just go to a hair salon and let them show you different styles. Most all salons have pictures so you can decide.
If you don't like the color you could try dying it. And if your parents don't approve tell them you'll try a natural color.
And if you don't like it short, well, grow it out. Trust me, I know it can be a pain waiting, and you don't like it at all, but if you liked it long, and since you don't like it at all now anyway, just be patient and let it grow.

I used to dislike my hair. I never really hated it, but it was pretty blah. Medium brown, straight but not silky, too poofy, just unspecial. So I dyed it green, and I loved it. Then I dyed it purple, and I loved it even more! If I wake up one morning and I'm having a bad hair day, it's not that bad, because it's still purple. Dying your hair a wacky color can really liven up your day, so it's something to consider (if your parents are okay with it).

Not to say that dying hair is bad if thats your thing, but if growing your hair long is your goal, dying your hair will hamper this.

I too cut my hair short, when I was in 11th grade. I kept it short all through 12th grade, but by the time I went off to uni, I wanted to grow it out again. Between May 2000 and September 2001, I did not get my hair cut at all, not even a trim, and in that time my hair went from definitely short to definitely long (about mid-way down my back). In September, I had to get about two inches cut off because my split ends were pretty bad. However, my hairdresser said that they were as bad as someone's who hadn't had their hair trimmed in 6 months. When I told her that it have been 16 months since my last haircut, she was very surprized, and put it down to two factors:
1- I don't blow dry my hair
2- I don't dye my hair

So basically, these two little things allowed me to grow my hair out much faster. I don't use any conditioner either, although I have heard that some of them can help prevent split ends- and supposedly they can help with texture and shine etc as well.

Some days I hate my hair, while others I really like it.

Mine is a medium brown. It's very soft and sorta silky, and a little past shoulder length. The color is a little boring, so I want to get highlites soon.

I'd suggest what entropie said -- go to your hair sylist and let them take over. They've had experience with this, so they'll know what will look best on you. Have fun!

i think almost everyone hates their hair at one point. It's either too poufy or flat, or ugly, or what have you.
You just have to think about what's great in your hair that lots of other people don't have. For straight hair, it's that its usually wash and go. For curlies, you don't have to worry about spending hours curling your hair. And for wavy, i always look at it as you can either be straight or curly, and neither are gonna nearly as much effort as if you were one extreme or the other.

Also, i have a hair color similar to yours jenni, and to spruce it up i just get highlights to make it lighter. Its not really blond, just sorta redish-orange-brown. its fun.

And as for having thick hair, just think about how you'll probably never have to worry about thinning hair.

I love my hair now.

For about 14 years of my life, it was long. I hated that. It didn't suit me at all. Then I got it cut short (like, the length that enables me to spike it, maybe a little longer) and I've loved it ever since.

I have dark blonde hair, and all of the wave in it is in the very front, so I have crazy cowlicks and such in front and a roostertail on occasion, and cowlicks all over. My hair is crazy, but it's a good crazy.

the major part of the persons hate their hair. In this moment i really don't like mine, i want it longer to make it curly. Well, if you have problems with your hair, go to your stylist and ask him/her for a relax, it helps a lot. It makes it silky and softy. About your length, let it grow if you want to, or ask to your stylist to a cool hairstyle, he will know what's better for you. About the color, if you want to dye it, use a natural color, so it will not damage your hair so much.

hmm. i never hated my hair. my hair is like a good cup of coffee: straight and black.

i stopped getting regular haircuts in 10th grade. at that time, it was halfway down my back. at its longest, it extended past my butt. I could sit on it.

but i got tired of it. Never hated it, but found it really inconvenient. my hair was getting caught in doors, on chairs, and i'd always have to hold onto it in the bathroom so it wouldn't fall into the toilet bowl.

so dec 22, 2001, i got it all chopped off. i sent a 28 inch bundle of hair to a charity and looked in the mirror and grinned gleefully at my new shorn locks. i liked my hair before, but i **LOVE** it now.

as for hair maintenance, i seldom blowdry, but i do dye. just my bangs, though. i dye those blonde, so i have these two bright blonde streaks framing my face. but 4 years of peroxide have done damage to those strands. you can feel the dfference. they're lighter in mass, stiffer, less springy. they feel frail because they are. this is why i do not ever want to dye al my hair. it'd never recover.

now, this is something i don't say very often, but have you checked out any teen mags? they're pretty flimsy for sex advice, but they do have a lot of hair, fashion and beauty.

As for like or disliking hair, you need to think about liking your body. I am a bald guy; I had to learn & accept baldness.

I HATE MY HAIR!!!!! i cant stand it, its wavy/curly,frizzy, eww

in around last semtember, 2001, i did the most drastic hair cut ever, i went shorter than i ever had, kinda like where you can spike it, but a girls hair cut, u know?, the shortest before that was the middle of my neck.

in about november, i decided to grow it out again, i got teased a little, and different things.

it was in so many different layers, im still growing it out,my longest layer is about chin length, and my shortest layer is right above my hair, if i pull it straight down "very curly" especially when its short. i want to be able to just put in up like i had it i middle school, then atleast, WELL, i could put my disscusting hair up right now, i just put gel in it.

i know ppl say you grow 1/2 inch a month, but it seems lke my hir has only grown, 2 inches since november, instead of 4, maybe it just my imagination.

hw long do u guys think it wll take for the hair that is right above my ear, to get chin length?

curly/wavy/frizzy/yuck! I had it straightened at a salon the other day (just blow dry and straightening irons)and I loved it but now it's just horrid again! I would love long, black, straight hair.

Hey Jenni! My hair sounds A LOT like yours but also, it curls at the ends in the same direction. You know what I mean? Not both in or both sides out but bothe to the right! I try to curl it in sometimes in the morning but it takes a long time and it always ends up changing back in like, a couple hours or less, except it's even MORE of a drastic curl. Any advice, anyone??

I pull my hair back into a low ponytail every single day. Underneath, it curls under (major curls ;D) and people always point it out. Personally, it's a trademark and I love it!

first off, thanks everyone for your replies, I really appreciate them. I never get to talk to anyone about this.

Stephanie- I cut my hair to a little below my ears last year (VERY drastic for me) and I too have quite slow-growing hair. After a month, I was already figuring out how long it would take to grow it back out. So I totally sympathize with you, waiting is awful (it's been over a year and it's still not long enough, with only one trim). I've heard hair grows slightly faster in the summer, so hopefully that will make you feel a little better.

The ends of my hair just curl/wave in random directions, so trying to tame it is a mess. Ugh.

Today I wore it sort of down, sort of pulled back without blow-drying it or anything and by the time I got home it looked like complete crud. It usually isn't that bad... oh well.

Difficult hair owners unite! lol. Down with the pantene commercials.

My hair is quite curly naturally. But my curls are those small curls that just frizz when you try to brush them. I hate my hair curly. its just frizzy and sheepish.

I straighten my hair with a steam striaghtner almost every second day. the only time i wear it curly is to bed (after i wash it). i used to wear it curly for school all the time but i like it ALOT better straight. i just dont know how to make curls look nice.

while i'm all for loving oneself unconditionally, I gotta admit, there is such thing as having an ugly haircut. It's like buying a hideous piece of clothing, only worse because you can return the clothes the next day, whereas hair may take longer to undo.

mazz, about them frizzies. Have you tried a short style with some mousse? short spiky styles seem pretty "in" these days, and they're easy to do. Just dampen your hair slightly then get a little mousse and scrunch your hair. quick, easy and totally sassy

Actually, I have a friend with tight curly hair, and while it is quite long, the mousse trick also works for her- when she puts it in her hair she ends up with tiny little ringlets instead of friz.

people i know, say its realy growing, it probaly is, but because i want it to grow more than 1/2 inch a month, it seems like it aint

Steph- oh mannn, letsee if I can remember, I think it has grown out about 5-6 inches since last year's april, which is about on schedule with the 1/2 inch per month rule considering I got it trimmed this past april. Where it was just below my ears before, it is now a couple inches under my collar bone.

Many of my friends' hair grow definitely faster than 1/2 inch per month. Mine grows right at that rate or slightly slower. I think it's definitely possible your hair could take longer than others to grow out. And yes, it really, really sucks. Even now when it's where I THOUGHT I'd be happy with it I'm not. Urrrgh the wait...
