Who are you comfortable talking about sex with?

Unread post by Sam W »

Now, this does not mean only discussing your personal sex life or sexual feelings. It can mean simply discussing issues around the politics of sex, or stuff like periods, STIs, and pregnancy in the abstract.

So who, if anyone, do you feel comfortable talking about those topics with? Friends? Family? Romantic or sexual partners only? And why do you feel comfortable talking with them about it?

As for feelings & personal life I'll take to a friend or trusted adult who is not my mother because I don't really want to share that with her. When it comes to the clinical side I'll talk to my doctor , or consult other person who can provide me with medically accurate info.

I'm comfortable discussing sex with everyone who's not my family. It's not even that it feels icky, it's just that we have wildly different opinions on politics and choice and expression and it is not worth it to go through that conflict with them. Everyone else, people who generally feel much less entitled to my acquiescence, has been much more reasonable.

Yeah I think for me it's also non-parents.

I'm comfortable with partners and close friends. I do find that acquaintances outside of that can be more judgemental (or I might fear that they are before finding out otherwise) which does feel less comfortable.

I'm usually comfortable with my mom, but sometimes not even her. I usually have to go to sites like this to ask my questions. ;)

Not with parents at all. Mostly with friends. Current gf has done some stuff and we are talking about moving further with physical stuff.

I'd say I'm comfortable talking about sex as a real possibility in the context of myself only really around my partner and a close friend of ours, but sex in general, porn, sexuality are topics for most people I'm close with. My parents I feel I could talk about sex, like I feel they'd be understanding but it'd be a mutually awkward experience.

Maybe because I’m on a college campus but it’s pretty easy to talk to people at sex when it’s say, an overview and not detailed - like gender norms with sex, consent, kinks, etc. I also talk with my mom a bit and sometimes my older brother about the politics of sex. With more personal stuff I have at least one friend who I spoke to about that. It kind of just happened one day. She’s pretty open about her sex life so it’s not awkward or anything.

For me it's first and foremost my friends! I was reflecting the other day that I think a big thing I look for in friends are people who are comfortable talking about subjects that other people might find embarrassing/over-sharey/too personal etc. Especially when it comes to bodies. I have managed to compile a great group of (mostly) gals who are super down to talk about whatever, and it's something I really value!
