HPV Vaccine

Hi, I'm a 20 year old virgin and I'm interested in taking the HPV vaccine - either Gardasil or Cervarix.
I understand that it is most effective if given before first sexual exposure. However, what actually leads to the complications?
I'm looking at having sexual intercourse prior and maybe during the various doses of vaccination, with my partner - who is also a virgin.
Being a virgin, I believe he might not be exposed to any type of HPV yet - would this be true? Therefore, would it still affect the effectiveness of the vaccination?
Otherwise, would using some form of protection (ie. Condoms) prevent the transmission of HPVs and therefore not affect the effectiveness of the vaccine?
Hope I'm not asking too much.. still very inexperienced in this area. Thank you.
