anything for love

why does our culture seem so obsessed with the idea of totally giving yourself up because you supposedly love someone? even if it means breaking your principles, hurting yourself, letting someone break you? like realistically "doing anything for love" shouldn't be a relationship goal

I certainly agree with you that doing absolutely anything for love, regardless of the impact on yourself or anything else, is not a great idea. There are a lot of cultural ideas about romantic love and relationships that sound more like a recipe for an unhealthy relationship dynamic than a romantic ideal to me.
I think the narrative about love and relationships you hear will depend a lot on who's doing the talking; there are plenty of folks having conversations and creating fiction with a more measured approach to things.
