What did you use to believe about masturbation?

Unread post by Sam W »

It's national masturbation month! Masturbation is one of those topics that there's (still) a lot of misconceptions about. So I'm curious to know if y'all were taught some things about masturbation that were less than correct. I definitely remember reading the "masturbating too much means you don't like your partner" myth in at least one magazine.

How about y'all?

When I was in my teens I spent some time in church environments that stated masturbation was not just wrong, but equivalent to adultery. I don't know that I ever fully believed it, but it was hard not to internalize some of that message; this particular church was great at promoting sexual shame.

I didn't know the clitoris existed for a long time and so when I tried to give myself any pleasure I was just trying to fit fingers inside me and it was not good.
