Lauren replies:Hi, I am a girl and lately when I masturbate, a lot of fluid seems to be gushing out of me almost like I'm peeing when I'm about to come. Is this normal? How do I get it to stop? Thank you for your time.
Hi Tina,
What you're describing sounds like a phenomena called "female ejaculation". Female ejaculate is a very distinct fluid, similar in composition to semen, believed to be secreted by the Skene's glands. The Skene's glands are located along the urethral sponge, which, along with the pubococcygeus muscle, fills with blood during arousal and serves to compress the urethra, preventing urination during sexual activity. Though female ejaculate may sometimes be mixed with urine, it is no longer believed that it is simply a form of urinary incontinence.
Some women report that they experience less ejaculation/"squirting" when they make sure they empty their bladders right before sexual activity. This makes sense, since it cuts down on the potential for urine mixing with ejaculate, and a full bladder serves to swell the urethral sponge, making it more accessible during sexual activity.
But, overall? You've but to lay down some towels or hop in the shower to make it a non-issue. And a non-issue it is; perfectly healthy, perfectly common!
