Unprotected intercourse worries

Bella asks:

My period's relatively regular, if it's off then it's usually only by a few days. Well, it's a little more off then normal, about a week and a half. I haven't had sex with my boyfriend until orgasm for quite a while now but these last couple of weeks we have "slipped it in" two or three times. My boyfriend doesn't pre-ejaculate but I know guys self lubricate a little. What I'm not sure about is if that lubrication is ejaculate fluid. If it is then is it possible to get pregnant off that? I'm worried because of missing my period but for the last three or four days i've been getting slight cramps that feel like menstrual cramps. But also, I have never gotten cramps more than a day before my actual period. Could a tiny bit of sperm from slipping it in gotten me pregnant? What else could be causng cramps similar to menstrual cramps? Thank you so much for your help with this.

Heather replies:

That self-lubrication IS pre-ejaculate, and all guys do that. Not sure why you or your partner would assume he's an exception to the rule, but it's very unlikely he is.

Because those fluids can pull residual sperm from the urethra from a previous ejaculation, pre-ejaculate is thought to sometimes contain sperm, and so can pose a pregnancy risk, particularly if a man hasn't urinated just before sex. So, pregnant or not this time, if you do not WANT to become pregnant (and catch an STI), it's time to wise up a bit about the way you've been having sex and start using condoms, okay?

If you're starting to have cramps, it's likely your period is en route, but there's also no need to wait around and stress yourself out: just go ahead and take a pregnancy test. For around $10, it can often help your sanity more than $100 of therapy can.

Lastly, since y'all have been having unprotected intercourse, if you're both not current with your yearly STI (sexually transmitted infection) screenings, then it's important you both hop on that soon, too.
