Susie replies:Why is it that guys find it a turn off when a girl drinks? When it comes to guys, it does not matter if they drink or not, but when it comes to girls they can't drink at all -- why is it like that?
First off, I want to say I do not condone under-aged drinking. There's a big overlap between under-aged drinking and binge drinking, and the result is a whole mess of problems that include drunk driving, sexual assault, violence, injuries, and death due to alcohol poisoning. Criminal penalties for under-aged drinking vary by region, so it pays to know what the punishment is if you commit "MIP" (minor in possession, as it is called in my part of the world).
With that said, you're stereotyping people's perceptions of how we view drinkers. I think it's ironic that a lot of young people supposedly drink to look cool, but so many people just think teen drinkers are losers. Is there a double-standard in terms of how people perceive boys and girls who drink? Somewhat. These stereotypes revolve around the perceptions of how men and women "should" behave, and the kind of behavior that ensues when you've been drinking. Many societies are remarkably forgiving of guys who act rowdy and engage in mischief -- "boys will be boys" or so they say. But not for girls. Girls are supposed to be "sugar and spice and everything nice." And apparently keg stands doth not make a refined lady. But not everyone feels the same way about the matter, so let's not assume that all guys are repulsed by girls who drink alcohol.
Historically, men and women have had different drinking habits. Men are usually far more likely to drink alcohol than women. These differences persist in many parts of the world today. However a recent study of adolescent alcohol consumption* in the US has shown that the gap between male and female binge drinking habits is closing. More girls are drinking heavily to "keep up with the boys." This is not the best way to achieve gender equality, but it does say a lot about the attitudes some girls have about gender roles these days.
Is all alcohol consumption necessarily bad? Depends on your cultural outlook. Some religions forbid the consumption of alcohol, so people in those groups generally have a negative view of alcohol. In my opinion, if you can consume alcohol moderately and responsibly, within the bounds of the law, and without inflicting harm on others (e.g., do not drink if you are pregnant, operating a car or heavy machinery) then I don't see a problem with the stuff or its use. Many people would agree with this.
Do you feel like guys are unfairly judging you for your drinking? What do you feel you have to gain by drinking alcohol? People have different motives for it. I drink wine (I'm above the legal drinking age) because I find it to be a sensual experience. But if you drink to be cool and social, and people think you're not cool and they avoid you, then I suppose you need to rethink your plan.
