Condoms, Pregnancy Fears

Lindsay asks:

My boyfriend and i recently had sex twice (unfortunately more than three days ago, so Plan B is not an option). He was really "anxious" the second time and kept becoming hard although he couldn't really stay hard. The condom kept rolling up slightly (it was still about an inch from the tip so it didn't fall off). He would re-adjust it as soon as he could and since he had cum not even an hour before, there was no cum in this condom yet. I was just wondering if that was still safe, like is there more of chance of pregnancy from that? If it helps, the condom had spermicide lube and did not break (i filled it with water to be sure). Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Paul replies:

Dear Lindsay,

Actually, Plan B (EC, emergency contraception, the morning after pill) can be taken up to 5 days or 120 hours after intercourse.

I'm assuming you used a new condom the second time. This is good. It sounds like he didn't ejaculate the second time, which would be good as well. The question is if the condom covered the head of his penis the entire time. So it is possible you are pregnant, but I think the odds are in your favor.

I don't believe that the condoms with spermicide do a better job of preventing pregnancy than condoms without spermicide. The spermicide also irritates the lining of your vagina. This makes it easier for sexually transmitted infections to get in, and women who use the spermicide-coated condoms have three times more urinary tract infections than women who use regular condoms. So you might try to avoid condoms with spermicide in the future if you can, although they are MUCH better than no condom at all.

In case you like history, back in the late 1800s there were two styles of condom: those that went all the way down the shaft of the penis, and those that just fit over the head of the penis. The ones that just fit over the head of the penis were by far the more popular. I'm not sure how they actually stayed on, or if they worked very well. Since latex back then wasn't very good, the better condoms were made of animal intestines or fish skin and membranes.
