To ensure proper sexual health, women should start getting annual gynecologist check-ups shortlyafter they start having periods. Check-ups are especially important if...

  1. You have a family history of reproductive cancers and conditions.
  2. You are sexually active.
  3. You have really irregular or abnormal menstrual cycles, including excessive pain and excessive bleeding.
  4. You are over the age of 17 and have not had a menstrual period.

Even if you haven't met these criteria, and you still feel like you should check on your reproductive health, you can talk to your primary care physician, and possibly get a referral to a gynecologist. On the flip side of that if you are being examined by a gynecologist, as a patient, you always reserve the right to refuse a pelvic exam. That limits what they can check for, though.
